Real Hipsters Of Vancouver (Audition Videos) *WATCH*

by Carmen Cruz

The Craigslist casting call ad read as follows:
“looking for hip, fun, attractive people under 40. Include your age, show us your personality. What makes you tick? What ticks you off?”

'The Real Hipsters Of Vancouver' is a hip and cheeky twist on the 'Real Housewives of (insert place of choice here)', and it's been getting a lot of attention.  The Vancouver Sun, The Globe & Mail, and yes, even catty gossip queen Perez Hilton featured an article about the upcoming reality tv series.

Audition tapes have been pouring in. Wanna see some? Here ya go.

Best Perogy Dinner In Vancouver

by Carmen Cruz

All praise the almighty perogy!

If you find yourself with a hankering for perogies like Baba used to make, it's time for you to get to
church - seriously.
On the first Friday of every month, Holy Trinity Orthodox Church puts together a good ol' fashioned homemade Ukrainian supper.  For anywhere between $8 - $12 (and depending on how hungry you are) you can dine on perogies, cabbage rolls, sauerkraut and Ukrainian sausage.
While the menu list isn't huge, they do offer a vegetarian option, as well as a take out menu is you prefer to munch at home.
The dinner runs from 5pm - 8pm and is extremely popular, so if you're wanting to get your hands on some piping hot perogies (and who doesn't really?!) make sure you show up early.

The perogy dinner will be taking place THIS Friday (April 5th, 2013) at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church (154 East 10th, just off Main Street).

Enjoy.

Save On Meats Sign Stolen. Seriously.

by Carmen Cruz

Lot's of controversy lately regarding the 'gentrification of Vancouver's downtown eastside'.

Question.

Will stealing business signs, breaking storefront windows and harassing people who walk in and out of restaurants in the Gastown/ Commercial Drive area truly help bring about the change you're hoping for? Or will it just make you look like a jerk?

Hmmm....

Last week, Mark Brand from Save On Meats posted the following pic and message on Instagram:

These anarchists stole our sign. Yes I'm serious. They won't stop until the capitalists leave the neighbourhood. I'm serious. They will be embarking on a mission to close save on meats. I'm serious. Japanese peace pose. They're serious. In all seriousness this sign is a real heart felt piece for the people who work with us. It makes them really sad that people would steal it and disrespect their living. Therefore making me upset. Help me find it and spread the word fast. I'm serious.

Save On Meats (SOM) is a genuinely community-minded business in the DTES. At SOM, they try to hire both neighbourhood residents and the disabled. They also have a sandwich token program for those in need, and they donate food and services to various charities in the area.

So, Why Steal The Sign????

We all understand that people want to make a point, but not like this. Let's play nice.

Turn Off Them Lights! It's Earth Hour 2013

by Carmen Cruz

It's that time of year again.

Tomorrow (Saturday) it's all about a little something called 'Earth Hour'.
So what's the deal?
The World Wildlife Federation (WWF) came up with a brilliant idea to help unite people in an effort to protect our little planet. All you have to do is turn out the lights TOMORROW NIGHT from 8:30PM - 9:30PM. That's it. That's all.
So what  are you supposed to do in that hour? How about a romantic, candle lit dinner for 2?  Or enjoy a glass of vino with close friends! Or maybe you could go for an evening stroll and  literally watch all the lights being turned off throughout the city (it'll be the perfect time for star gazing). I'm sure you can come up with many things you can do with the lights out **ahem** **wink, wink** (scrabble?).
Oh! And here's a fun little fact for ya, Vancouver has been named the "Earth Hour Capital" for 2013. This is the WWF's way of giving us a high five for going above and beyond when it comes to taking action on climate change.  So it's official. We're awesome.
Wanna find out more info about Earth Hour? Here's a little video for you...

There's tons more for you to check out at the Earth Hour website.
While you're there, make sure you sign up for the "I Will If You Will Challenge".
I know I will... If you will... ;)

 Enjoy!
