Shopping Event On Main Street ~ 'Converge'

by Carmen Cruz

There are so many amazing little shops on Main street. So many, in fact, that sometimes we tend to walk past a little gem, waiting to be discovered, without even realizing it.

For one night only, the peeps on Main street have decided to hold a shopping extravaganza. This is your chance to:
a) Discover new and amazing little shops that you might have never noticed before.
b) Save some cash on that thing you've been eyeing for the past month. You know... that thing... in that store....
c) **National Geographic Narrator Voice** See the Hipster in it's natural environment. Grazing on an ironic salad, drinking ironic coffee and celebrating all things ironic - all of this done with an 'I don't give a shit' demeanor. Sweet.

The event is called Converge and it's happening THIS Thursday from 6pm-9pm, with various stores offering anywhere from 10% to 40% off their wares.  Here's a list/map for ya:

Have fun shopping you crazy kids! Oh, and buy something pretty for me, will ya? I'll be in Edmonton on Thursday, so I'll be missing out on all the fun.
Fail.

Enjoy!

Need more info on tonight's movie? Go here.

To the gang at Fresh Air Cinema - you're the bees knees.

by Carmen Cruz

The awesome peeps at Fresh Air Cinema are back at it again with another summer of free outdoor movies. It's happening every Tuesday in Stanley Park (in Ceperley Meadow). The movie starts around sunset (so close to 9-ish?).

Tonight's outdoor movie is Zoolander and it's really, really, ridiculously good looking.

Future movies include classics like  Grease, Spaceballs, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Labyrinth. (I have no idea why, but to this day, I still reference someone's stinky apartment/home as the 'Bog of Eternal Stench'... Ha!).

Be sure to check out Fresh Air Cinema's facebook page for all the upcoming movie dates and details.

Maslow and I will be there with bells on. See ya there!

What's with the facebook iPhone app???

by Carmen Cruz

If you have the facebook app on your iPhone, you know exactly what I'm talking about. It's PAINFULLY S----L----O---W,  it tends to crash a lot, and is overall frustrating and useless. You'd think that smarty pants Mark Zuckerberg and his facebook posse would have the smarts to tweak and improve their app, right? Well this hasn't been the case... until now.
Word has come out that the facebook team have, " completely rebuilt its iOS application to optimize for one thing: speed". That's nerd talk for - they're fixing it and making it awesome. Expect to see the upgrade take place sometime this month (yay!).

Want more info? Check out this article from The New York Times.

Ok. Back to frolicking outside in the sun. Yes. Frolicking.

SONGS OF THE WEEK~ JAZZ EDITION!!!

by Carmen Cruz

In honour of this years Vancouver Jazz Festival (running now until July 1st, 2012) here are a few fantastic Jazz tunes.

(Getting Some) Fun Out Of Life ~ Madeleine Peyroux

La Vie En Rose ~ Louis Armstrong - A classic. I love his version of this tune. I apologize in advance for the cheesy video.

Bebel Gilberto ~ She's more bossa nova than jazz, but still, this woman is AMAZING.

Ella Fitzgerald ~ All The Things You Are - They don't call her 'The Song Bird' for nuthin'.

Harry Connick Jr. ~ It Had To Be You - Oh how I looooooooove this man. Random Story: When I was young I used to visit my sister in Montreal every summer. One year, she decided to surprise me with tickets to the Harry Connick Jr. concert at the Bell Centre. Third row on the floor... AAAHHHH!!!!  I was over the moon!!!  With just '7 sleeps' left before the big day of the concert, I could barely contain my excitement. The day before I flew out to Montreal, I got a call from my sister. She let me know that the employees of the Bell Centre had gone on strike, and the concert was cancelled. I was devastated. To this day, I STILL haven't had a chance to catch one of his shows. I've added this to my bucket list.

And now for something really different....

My Favourite Things ~ Outkast - Yup, it's the tune from 'The Sound Of Music'- Outkast style. Take the old song you know and love, and make it drop acid. Overall, it's pretty brilliant (instrumental).

Enjoy!

Vancouver International Jazz Festival

by Carmen Cruz

If you haven't had a chance to check out this years Vancouver Jazz Fest, you still have a few days left! There are quite a few different venues scattered around Vancouver where you can check out some amazing (and free!) live jazz. If you're willing to part with a few bucks, here are some acts you should definitely check out:

Get The Blessing ~ A Jazz/Rock band from England. Honestly? They're a truly BRILLIANT band! They're playing The Venue tonight. Tickets are $20+sc (and worth every penny). They hit the stage at 9pm.

Janelle Monaé ~ I consider her a female version of Outkast. She's AMAZING!!! She's playing THIS Friday at the Centre for Performing Arts. Tickets are about $47+sc and last time I checked, there were still a few left.

Jill Barber ~ She'll be putting on 2 shows at Granville Island - Performance Works. The earlier show is sold out, but you can still get tickets for the 10PM show. They'll set you back about $27.50 plus service charge.

Sunday is the last day for this years Jazzfest, but it's also Canada day soooo.... go nuts!

On a side note, one of my favourite people in the world took me to check out a band I'd never heard of, and promised me that  I'd love it and 'go nuts'. Turns out these guys were one of the headliners of this years Jazzfest. They're a group called the Balkan Beat Box and they're a fusion of Arabic, Mediterranean, Balkan, reggae and dance music. I don't think I've ever danced so much (at a show) in a loooong time. I think everyone in the Vogue theater left happy, covered in sweat and a few pounds lighter.
Wait a minute.... ;D
So I thought I'd share.

**Side note: To the bald guy dancing in front of the stage, you made my night. You were AWESOME!!!**

Enjoy!

André 3000 = Jimi Hendrix

by Carmen Cruz

One of the coolest guys on the planet, André 3000, is currently in Dublin, filming (and starring in) the new Jimi Hendrix biopic called 'All Is By My Side'. He looks just like Jimi, no?
Here are pics of André with his co-star, Hayley Atwell. She plays Linda Keith, the then girlfriend of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith (leatherface) Richards.

No word yet on when you can catch the flick in theaters.

Eddie Vedder and Tom Petty - The Waiting & American Girl

by Carmen Cruz

Those lucky bastards in Amsterdam!
Tom Petty has been touring Europe (so has Pearl Jam) and the other night Eddie decided to jump on stage at one of Petty's shows and help the old man out. Yes, fans there were serenaded by Eddie Vedder AND Tom Petty.
Pretty sweet huh?!?!?!?!

Here they are singing 'The Waiting' and 'American Girl'.

*Songs Of The Week*

by Carmen Cruz

Good Stuff.

Mike Snow ~ Sylvia - Cause they're so much more than just the song 'Animal'.

Neon Indian ~ Polish Girl  - This is the song that makes all the Polish girls run out on the dance floor and scream. It's their equivalent of 'Brown Eyed Girl'. Jk ;)

 Modest Mouse ~ Float On

The Black Keys ~ Little Black Submarines - Cool.

Kings Of Leon ~ The Face - A tune that Caleb wrote for his (now) wife (and Victorias Secret model), Lily Aldridge. A song about wanting to stick together, tough it out, and "ride out the wave" of their careers together. *Love*

Fifty Shades Of Grey = HILARIOUS!

by Carmen Cruz

It seems like every second female you bump into is either intently reading the insanely popular novel 'Fifty Shades Of Grey', or she's recommending that you read it - as soon as possible.

If you're like me, you're just not into the whole notion of erotic novels. I mean, what makes this particular book any different from, say, those 'Harelquin Romance' novels your lonely next door neighbour used to read when you were a little kid, back in the days when you didn't really understand the whole concept of 'erotic novels'.
You know what books I'm talking about, right? Those romance novels that nowadays,  you'll find piled high in cardboard boxes, laying on the floor of the garage sale you just happened to walk past. These books always have pictures of busty women with long flowing hair and muscular men, hovering over them.

Nah. No thanks.

So instead, I found this. It's an amazing and awe-inspiring ode to 'Fifty Shades Of Grey'.

I literally laughed till I cried.

PRICELESS!!!

Call Me Maybe

by Carmen Cruz

One of the most (ugh) overplayed songs of the year that's been covered to DEATH - and yet, I think this version is kinda awesome. Maybe it's because Jimmy Fallon is in it? Or maybe it's because of The Roots? Or all those funky instruments? Either way, I just thought I'd share it with you.

...And besides, who can hate this adorable, local (born and raised in BC) gal?

Enjoy!
