Did boy band One Direction rip off The Clash?!?!

by Carmen Cruz

Internet nerds everywhere are pointing fingers at boy band 'One Direction'. They believe the processed-cheese-style band ripped off the opening bars of The Clash's classic track 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' in their new single – scroll down to compare the two songs.

Hmmmmm...
(**sorry for subjecting you to One Direction**)

Rule #1: Talk about pillow fight club

by Carmen Cruz

When most people think of pillow fights, they either think of:
a) Little girls at a sleepover
b) Bigger girls at a sleepover... and suddenly things get erotic.  NOT.

Tomorrow night, the female contenders from the East Van Pillow Fight Club will be meeting up for another round of extreme pillow fighting action at the Astoria.
Think: The way your older/ younger brother would beat you with a pillow. Sure, the pillow is soft, but that softness tends to kinda disappear when that it's coming towards your face at high speed.

Just watching this video is making me bruise (easy bruiser in the houuuuuse!! **pushes up nerd glasses**). Let's safely watch from the sidelines, yes?

The action starts at 8pm at the Astoria (769 East Hastings), and tickets are $10.

Enjoy!

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup ~ THIS WEEKEND

by Carmen Cruz

We here in Vancouver have the luxury of being able to drive/walk/bike/roller blade down to the beach whenever we want. We spend all summer enjoying everything our awesome beaches have to offer, so why not give back?

This weekend, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup will be taking place at beaches across the city. Last time I checked, the organization was still looking for more volunteers to help with the cleanups taking place on English Bay, False Creek, Creekside and quite a few other locations.

Wanna help make things pretty? Click here to find out how you can get involved.

Happy 18th!!!!!

by Carmen Cruz

Feliz Dieciocho to all the Chileans out there!!!

Every 18th of September, Chileans across the globe celebrate what was the beginning of the independence of our country (September 18, 1810).

One of the most famous wines from Chile
Today, Chileans everywhere will be eating traditional food (empanadas please!), sharing a glass or two of vino tinto (red wine) and dancing till long after the sun has set (maybe a cueca - if we've had enough to drink).

Just picked up these empanadas today. Mmmmmm...

There were a bunch of Chilean parties celebrating 'El Dieciocho' last weekend, and I'm sure there will be even more this coming weekend. A few friends and I stopped by a shin-dig last Saturday, and I have to say, I was thankful for the Chilean cueca dance lessons my parents forced me to take when I was young. You might be asking yourself, what exactly IS a cueca? Well here ya go...

In between all our eating, drinking and dancing, we even managed to participate in a cueca dancing contest towards the end of the party. While none of us actually won, it was hilarious to see what dance moves we remembered from our childhood.
**Note: Most of us Chilean kids (growing up in Canada) were forced to go to 'Chilean school' on Saturdays. We were also "encouraged" (aka: forced - again) to spend at least 2 nights a week practicing folkloric dances with the dance groups our parents would "encourage" us to join. Believe it or not, my mother actually found an old VHS tape (ACK! OLD!!!) of one of my 'performances'. This video will never, I repeat, NEVER see the light of day.
At the time, all of us kids hated spending our precious free time in 'Chilean school' or in 'Chilean dance groups'- but it's pretty safe to say that now we can look back and be incredibly thankful that we had the opportunity to learn about and maintain our cultural roots... even if it wasn't by choice. **

So if you have any Chilean friends, tell them to have a 'Feliz Dieciocho!!!'... and then tell them how much you looooove Chilean wine. Maybe if you're lucky, they'll invite you over for a glass or two, and once they've had a few drinks, maybe, just maybe, they'll dance a little cueca for you (Gad forbid!).

VIVA CHILE!!!!

Photo Caption Contest ~ We Have A WINNER!

by Carmen Cruz

Last week, I posted the following pic sent to me by my good friend Dan.

The couple in this picture were part of a wedding taking place nearby, and Dan decided to ask them to be in a picture he wanted to stage. Yup, that's Dan in the suit, ready to hit the water (and yes, he's actually falling in this pic!).

I decided to launch a photo caption contest, with the most creative/funny/witty caption winning a bag of a 'Bestest Of Vancouver' featured item (a 225g packet of Holy Crap! Cereal). Dan, the man behind (and in) the pic helped me pick the best caption.

And the winner is..... Chery M! Here's what she submitted:

Thanks to everyone who submitted a comment, and Cheryl?

WTF FRIDAY ~ VIDEO OF THE DAY

by Carmen Cruz

It's called Gangnam Style and it already has over 167 million views. The rapper in this song is called PSY and apparently, he's a pretty big deal in Korea (and now the rest of the world).

Gangnam Style is a hilarious social commentary that talks about the overly opulent lifestyle of the Gangnam district in Korea... or so I'm told.

A catchy tune with sweeeeeet dance moves.

Now that his video has gone viral, PSY has been making appearances at all the big American talk shows.

I'm dedicating this video to my favorite Korean homie.

Enjoy!

The Bestest Of Vancouver ~ Earnest Ice Cream

by Carmen Cruz

Vancouver has always been a hotspot for artists. I'm talking musicians, painters, clothing designers, and the list goes on and on. But what about ice cream? Isn't ice cream making an art? Well the answer to that is yes, especially when you've had a taste of Vancouver based 'Earnest Ice Cream'.

I stumbled across these 'ice cream artists' at the Canada Day Block Party and Food Cart Festival in the parking lot of the Waldorf Hotel. As soon as Earnest Ice Cream expert Erica B. whispered the words 'salted caramel' I was hooked! One taste of this creamy delight took me to the land of ice cream Narnia... mmmmmm..........................

.... where was I ? Ah yes, Earnest Ice Cream.

This company is the brain child of dynamic duo Erica and Ben and they create their creamy concoctions at the Woodland Smokehouse & Commissary. Even though I'm currently obsessing about their salted caramel ice cream, this local company also makes an assortment of other amazing flavours like Tahitian Vanilla, Roasted rhubarb oat crumble, Cafe Etico Coffee and Whiskey with butter salted hazelnut, just to name a few.

So being the intrepid reporter  I am, I decided to have a quick chat with Erica and find out more behind the magic that is 'Earnest Ice Cream'.

Ice cream. Why? What inspired you to go down this path?

Erica -  We have both had life long love affairs with ice cream and we are both  passionate about food and cooking. Ice cream is a blank state - allowing us  to be creative with flavours and where we can take it. And, everyone loves ice cream! Ben's first job was at Dairy Queen. I have attended culinary school (in Toronto).

What's your best selling ice cream? How did you come up with this  brilliant flavour idea and why do you think are people going nuts over it?

Erica -  Our best selling flavour is, by far, Salted Caramel. We sell out of it every week. It's the perfect balance of sweet and salty with an amazing texture and richness. It was a flavour we developed early on, based on an ice cream made by a role model of ours, Jeni's Ice Cream. We both loved it instantly and knew it would be a favourite.

What do you love most about what you do? What's the toughest part of it all?

Erica -  What do we love most... that's a difficult question! All of it! Being in the kitchen and developing new flavours is a definite highlight, but we also love being at the markets and at events where we get to chat with our customers directly. Toughest part..... all that ice cream we have to eat ;)

Let's look ahead a year from now. Where are you hoping Earnest Ice Cream will be?

Erica-  We'd love to have our own ice cream scoop shop.

Any future flavour ideas? Anything you'd really like to create, but are afraid to?

Erica - So many flavour ideas! We have a long "wish list". One we had been thinking about for some time, but was a little frightened of, we just did! It was the Smoked Peach with Almond. Working at the Woodland Smokehouse means we have access to smokers and just had to use them eventually! It is definitely an adventurous and different flavour, but I think it really works.

I've gotta ask,  what tunes do you play in the background while making your ice cream?  Ice cream playlist please!

Erica -  We share a kitchen with a few other businesses, one of them is Cartems Donuterie. Rags (Cartems Chef) is also a dj so he is usually playing some sweet beats throughout the day. In the evenings, we usually have the radio tuned into Soul Town or Back Spin.

If you're interested in trying out Earnest Ice Cream for yourself (and why wouldn't you? It's the BEES KNEES!!!), you can try a cone of whatever flavour your heart desires (or whatever they have left in stock!) at Harvest Community Foods (243 Union Street) or at Cocoa Nymph (10th & Alma).
I can pretty much guarantee that you're going to fall in love with this stuff, so why not save yourself some time and just grab a pint?   You can pick one up for $9.00 (plus a $1.00 refundable deposit for the jar - recycling is awesome, right?) at The Woodland Smokehouse and Commissary (on Commercial and Pender). You can also find Earnest Ice Cream at Farmer's Markets and events around the city. When you're there, make sure you give Erica and Ben a high five for me :).

In Memory Of...

by Carmen Cruz

When most people think of September 11th, they think of New York, terrorists and the twin towers. A horrible and devastating tragedy.

The sad thing is, there's a heart-breaking tragedy that happened on September 11th, back in 1973. Not a lot of people talk about it, but they should.

Tuesday, September 11th, 1973, a coup d'etat organized by the Chilean military and funded by the US government took place. Democratic President Salvador Allende was assassinated. The military took over the government a dictatorship ruling began. Left wing supporters were hunted down and beaten, arrested, tortured or even killed. Can you imagine? Being tortured or killed for your political beliefs?

My father was one of those left wing supporters who was arrested and tortured. To this day, he's never told us exactly what happened to him, and to be quite honest, I don't think my heart could stand to truly know. Luckily, my father survived an entire year in prison. He was released and the beautiful and amazing country of Canada welcomed him with open arms, as a political refugee.

My dad was one of the lucky ones. Hundreds of thousands of other people weren't so lucky. They're called 'the disappeared'. Under cover right wing supporters or military came knocking on the doors of people's homes and work, asking to speak to various individuals. Many of these people would 'go for a walk' with military officers and were never seen again. To this day, no one knows what happened to 'the disappeared.' Some theories are that these people were killed, their stomachs were slit open and they were thrown into the ocean. There are other theories - some still more gruesome - that I won't get into. Either way, the bodies of these missing people have never been found, and their loved ones will never have the answers they deserve, or the peace of knowing where the bodies of the missing now rest.

Sting wrote a song about this called 'They Dance Alone'. The song talks about the many people (mostly women) who have lost the ones they love and are left to dance alone...

I consider myself so incredibly fortunate to be the very first member of my family to have been born in Canada, and on every September 11th, I take the time to remember what happened in Chile, what the people of Chile have been through and how truly lucky we ALL are. I'll never underestimate the strength of the human spirit, and namely, the strength and determination of my father and mother.

Today, my heart goes out to Chile and all the people who love the country.

Viva Chile!!!

Fashion's Night Out in Vancouver ~ TONIGHT

by Carmen Cruz

For the first time in Vancouver, Fashion's Night Out will be taking over the downtown core.

The evening kicks off with a fashion show at CBC's Studio 40 (700 Hamilton Street), with doors opening at 5:30pm (I've gotta be honest with you here. If you're not there at that time, you're pretty much not getting in). The fashion show starts at 6PM and lasts about an hour. It'll feature a few local designers and a bunch of big name international designers/companies.

After the show, you're encouraged to shop to your hearts content. Over 90 beauty and fashion retailers in the downtown core will be offering sales and specials and even restaurants are getting in on the action with 'fashion-inspired theme menus'.

Alberni Street and Robson Street will be the heart of all the retail action, with several nearby areas still offering you some solid deals (Yaletown and Davie Street).

If you're in a dancing mood later on tonight there will be an afterparty at Bar None, but heads up, you'll need a ticket to get in.

You can get all the info you need at Fashion's Night Out Website.

At this very moment I'm doing some lunges and stretches, getting all limber for tonight's shopping mayhem.

See ya there ;)

The Bestest Of Vancouver ~ Holy Crap!

by Carmen Cruz

Holy Crap! is a cereal that was created by a cute little old couple from Sechelt, but we here in Vancouver have pretty much adopted it as if it were our own.

It's a mix of healthy seeds and dried fruit, with a hint of cinnamon. It's vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free, and wheat-free and has been dubbed 'the healthiest thing you'll ever eat'. Even though it looks like something you would get if you swept up the area surrounding the bulk bins in your local grocery store, it's actually pretty tasty stuff!

Last year, the creators of Holy Crap! Cereal pitched their product on the show 'Dragon's Den', and after an investment $120,000 and tons of publicity, this little company hit the big leagues.

While most enjoy Holy Crap! as a morning cereal, I personally prefer it as a snack (sometimes after a work out). I microwave 2 tablespoons of this stuff in a small bowl of milk and Voila! A yummy and super healthy snack. You can also have it with water, or sprinkled into yogurt.

You can find Holy Crap! in most Urban Fare locations, as well as Choices, Capers, Nesters Market and a few Market Place IGA's. For a more detailed list of where to find this stuff, click here.

Just an FYI:This is probably the most expensive cereal you'll ever buy. It retails for around $11 for a 225g bag.

Is it really worth it?

Definitely.
